Using data from Yelp, NewYorkUpstate.com compiled a new ranking of the top spots for German food in upstate New York, including several in the Hudson Valley.
The rankings only took restaurants into account that were north of Westchester and Rockland counties. Hudson Valley restaurants to make the cut include:
Mountain Brauhaus Restaurant on Route 44/55 in Gardiner - Ulster County (third overall);
- “Three brothers came to New York City from southern Germany around 1917. One brother, Emil, settled in Gardiner, and after selling his Tavern down the road, opened the Sugar Bowl on the corner of Routes 299 & 44/55,” according to the owners. “The Sugar Bowl became known for its juicy burgers and the hearty welcome of its proprietor. A series of German chefs gradually added some of their favorite dishes from the Old Country, and the full-fledged restaurant was eventually renamed the Mountain Brauhaus.”
Schatzi’s Pub in Poughkeepsie - Dutchess County (eighth);
- “The exact meaning of Gastropub and with an outside beer garden. The menu was authentic German food which I cannot believe how tasty the schnitzel was,” one Yelp reviewer said. “I would definitely recommend this establishment and definitely comeback.”
Schatzi’s Pub & Bier Garden of New Paltz in New Paltz - Ulster County (12th);
- “Holy moly this place was good. We happened upon it off a recommendation to visit New Paltz for some good food options and wow were we not disappointed,” a reviewer said. While Schatzi's resides just across the bridge in this small town, it seems to have a great following of folks. It was pretty crowded although we didn't have to wait for a table for 5 in the back. Beer signs cover the walls interrupted by animal busts. The nice girl who showed us to our table was chatty and friendly. Service at our table was good, if not great, and the server's recommendations both on food and beer were on point.”
Gunk Haus in Highland - Ulster County (16th);
- “We created Gunk Haus to bring you the atmosphere of a true Bavarian Gasthaus, a warm and welcoming place of comfort, community and merriment. Gastfreundlichkeit in Bavaria means service that is gracious, knowledgeable, and neighborly,” the owners said on their website.
The Breezy in Greenwood Lake - Orange County (23rd);
- “Pretty view, comfortable ambiance, great burgers as well as entrees, I occasionally have some German specialties. Owners are great people who run a tight ship. Service is mostly very good. Great parking,” one Yelp reviewer noted.
Gus’s Restaurant & Tavern in New Windsor - Orange County (24th).
- “German / American cuisine with a focus on homemade food using local, seasonal and organic ingredients with plenty of passion, uncompromised service and outstanding selection,” the restaurant’s website reads.
